I cared for both parents simultaneously over a twelve year period having chosen to give up a high powered career to ensure that my parents lived in their own home for as long as possible with myself acting as their main carer. My father suffered Parkinson's Disease eventually resulting in neuro surgery to control dyskinesia (caused by Dopamine medication) of which followed dementia and wheel chair requirement. My mother suffered multiple orthopaedic conditions requiring surgery and following a nasty fall causing a brain haemorrhage also required neuro surgery again resulting in dementia and wheelchair requirement. My mother also suffered years of extreme pain owing to abdominal cancer. I literally carried out every possible role as required determined to make their lives not only as comfortable as possible but surrounded by a known environment to help ease their dementia fears. I had external care help in latter years and my ex husband assisted me with social outings. ...
