Hourly pay rate:

£650 pw + benefits

We are looking for a live-in carer to join our family in caring for Dad (84), who has dementia and mobility issues.

Because our family organise companionship, food, medication, medical visits etc, the actual working hours are less than typical for a live-in care role. Therefore, this role would suit someone who needs somewhere to live (3+ months) while studying online for example.

Duties

1) personal care

2) support transferring/walking.

Benefit Summary

Full employment contract (including paid holiday, pension, NI etc).

Salary: £650pw + gym/swim membership + training.

Free accommodation in a small private apartment with separate entrance and kitchen. Bathroom shared by Dad for morning strip washing/toileting, but otherwise private. Access to the garden. High-speed unlimited internet.

Location: Horsham, West Sussex

  • 8 minute walk to supermarket
  • 10 minutes walk from railway station (60 mins to London. 20 mins to Gatwick Airport)
  • 15 minutes walk to 25m swimming pool + gym (membership included in package)
  • 20 minutes walk to the town centre with all services (supermarkets, shopping, banking, post office etc)

 

Duties include:

  • Personal grooming
  • Moving and handling
  • Dressing / undressing
  • Bathroom assistance

 

8am - 9am

  • Getting Dad out of bed, strip washed and dressed.
  • Stripping and remaking bed.
  • Putting bed linen in washing machine.

9am - 8.30pm

  • Helping relocate Dad from his chair to the toilet for occasional toilet trips, and helping him toilet.
  • Helping relocate Dad from his chair to other locations (car, dining table, garden chair etc) when the need arises.
  • Helping Dad do his (20min) daily exercise regime.

8.30pm - 9pm

  • Getting Dad into his pyjamas and putting him to bed.

Overnight

There are no overnight care obligations with this role.
Dad may, however, shout at night due to his condition.
At these times, you may choose to visit him to see if he has any unmet needs.
Or you might ignore the noise and go back to sleep. He is safe in bed.
We recommend that you wear earplugs for sleeping.
We do not recommend this role for someone who is a very light sleeper, or someone who is unable to use their ample free time in the day to catch up on sleep missed at night.

There are no housework obligations with this position.
No car/driving licence required.

All the above criteria, plus:

  • Fit and healthy. Some physical strength is required to help Dad transfer, move him on the Sara Stedy, and to support my father when he walks.
  • Patient, kind, empathic and cheerful. Dad suffers from dementia and therefore can sometimes be confused, anxious and angry. You must have experience working with dementia patients and be able to respond to him with compassion, kindness and patience at all times. If you are cheerful, my father will be cheerful.

Please note, if you are successful in your application for this position, you will be either engaged directly or employed by the individual employer and not by Independent Lives. The role may be offered on an employed or self-employed basis, depending on the suitability and agreement with the employer. If the role is employed, you will be entitled to holiday pay and issued an employment contract.
