How does Brexit affect carers

24/06/2016

With the UK voting to leave the EU, European Workers are concerned about their future working in the UK. For reassurance, it will take a minimum of two years for the UK to officially leave the EU, following Article 50; which outlines the procedures to follow when leaving the EU. During the two years the UK will continue to abide by the EU treaties and laws.

The transition into leaving the EU will most likely take longer than two years as the UK must negotiate new laws with the countries within the EU to benefit both parties. The UK currently has almost 3 million EU Nationals working in the UK, which makes up for around 6.6 per cent of the workforce. Due to this the leave campaign assured European workers that the new immigration system would not affect them. The Polish Foreign Minister, Witold Waszczykowski, said that Poland would stay a key ally of Britain despite the vote to leave. Britain still needs more workers and European workers make up a vital part of the workforce.

Those who have lived in the UK for five years or more qualify for a permanent residence. Those who haven’t been in the UK for as long would possibly only need a documentation to prove their right to work in the UK.

We believe there will still be a place for carers to work and live in the UK and it won’t be for a minimum of two years before effects begin to take place on immigration.
