I have worked over 13 years professionally as a carer with experiences at various sectors in The UK , carrying out complex and social care needs for children, young adults and the elderly, in areas of learning disabilities and challenging behaviour, palliative and end of life care, care for, autism, Parkinson’s , dementia, epilepsy, spinal injury, brain damage, cerebral palsy, MS , in-continent care etc. I have trained and experienced in use of PEG or PEJ feed, nebuliser, suctioning, tracheostomy, glucose test, moving and handling etc. I am dedicated, caring, compassionate, empathetic and I currently care for a young adult with cerebral palsy. The duties which are similar but peculiar depending on the individual included assisting to help sit up in bed in the morning and undress, hoisting unto wheelchair, set up bathroom for all personal care, assist to get dressed, set up laptop, prepare breakfast and he eats, set up all needed at school for the day and drive to school. We both walk( him on wheelchair) to his classroom and I wait outdoors or in the car and he calls me when class is over, we walk to the library and he reads out pages that I copy for him. I either drive him home to do lunch or he buys one, he is excused to spend time with friends in school while I stay back in the van or just sit about until he calls me and we drive back home. He would normally ask to be alone and he calls me in to prepare dinner. We chat over dinner and he goes back to his room to be alone then calls me to help with having his shower if needed before he goes to bed. And for other cover in Bournemouth for a young under graduate which had two PAs, my colleague and I shared responsibilities and they were similar to what I did as listed above, except he was assisted to feed. Just before the cover at Bournemouth I did a cover for young a graduate near Preston with similar responsibilities, he was more engaged in sports ( power chair football) which he enjoyed and along with his father we assisted him in practice. He is a Manchester City fan and with his friends did match podcasts, we did shopping together, he loved to participate in kitchen activities, we played music and talked quite a lot about football matches. My name is Karmen. I’ve been a carer for just short of a year now (started in December 2025). How I came about becoming a carer; I used to be a dog walker and pet sitter (huge lover of animals) and although it was fulfilling in many ways, financially it just wasn’t sustainable. A friend of mine suggested caring and said that I would be really good at it so I gave it a go! She’s been a carer for over 6 years and said that my nature would be perfect for it, and she was right - I’m a patient, calm, caring and understanding person by nature and the clients I have worked with have really enjoyed me and have always requested that I return to them after my break. Unfortunately, cloning doesn’t exist! I’ve been asked to work at a few clients and currently have 3 that I rotate between and even became the lead carer at one of them. This has given me experience in Dementia, Parkinson’s and general frailty that comes with aging. It’s also been character building as every person and placement is different and you have to be adaptable. Although care work can be quite demanding, I find it so rewarding. I have completed all of the essential and mandatory certificates, but nothing beats learning like hands-on experience! What do I like to do in my spare time? I enjoy reading a good book, watching series or movies, and I’ve recently taken on doing macramé which I’m thoroughly enjoying. Other things I like doing when I’m not on duty and have time off; I like going out and socialising with my friends. I also enjoy seeing live bands, going travelling, and of course, walking my own dogs. I do try and make the most of life. I enjoy spending time in nature and with animals. I have a full UK driver’s license, DBS checked, and fully insured, and full right to work in the UK. ...
