Job Description

FEMALE live-in carer.
Client’s own home, Surrey.
Rate of pay is £140 per 24-hour shift.

We are looking for a part time live-in carer to work Saturday 10pm to Tuesday 10am each week.

You will be on call 24 hours a day during your shift, and may need to be awake during the night. Your busiest hours are likely to fall between 11am and 11pm.

Please send your CV in order to be considered.

You will be looking after a young woman (30s) who suffers from a range of serious health problems. You will have a small room in a house in the Ashtead Station area. You will hand this room over to another care worker at the end of your shift.

The client can become paralysed very suddenly (and on occasion will suffer seizures, spasms and dystonia).

Your tasks will include:
•Looking after the client when she is suffering from paralysis or a seizure-like episodes.
•Trying to keep the client calm and quiet, and making sure she doesn’t overdo things
•Keeping the client’s room, the upstairs bathroom and the kitchen clean and tidy
•Preparing all of the client’s meals and snacks
•Massaging the client’s joints and muscles
•Keeping a written record of all medicine that the client takes
•Washing the client’s hair and helping her clean her teeth
•Helping the client use the commode
•Going to the doctor’s surgery and chemist to manage the client’s prescriptions
•Doing the client’s washing and ironing
•Occasional visits to the local Tesco to pick up items of food
•Doing anything else for the client that she would be able to do for herself if she were healthy

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
1. Candidate must be able to demonstrate sound knowledge of food preparation and food hygiene.
2. Candidate should have good literacy skills (such as the ability to read complicated labels and instructions on medicine boxes).
3. Previous experience of working in a caring role, particularly with people who have seizures, would be an advantage
4. Candidate should be aware that a certain degree of physical strength and agility is involved in this role.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The ideal candidate will be:

1. Hard working: this is a demanding job, and a good work ethic is essential.
2. Flexible: due to the nature of the client’s illness, the carer’s hours will often be irregular, and their duties will vary from day to day. The ideal candidate will need to be flexible to adapt to this way of working.
3. Proactive: the carer won’t be micro-managed. It will be up to them to do the cleaning and laundry as and when it needs doing, and to prompt the client to take her medication and eat at the appropriate times.
4. Caring: the ideal candidate should have a caring attitude.
5. A good listener: communication is a very important part of this role, particularly as the client may sometimes struggle to understand what is going on during a seizure. It is vital that the client tries their best to understand what it is the client is asking for (rather than what the carer thinks she needs).
6. Well organised: the idea candidate will have good organization skills, be able to help the client stick to a routine and have an excellent memory.
