I have just completed a 5wk placement as a live-in carer supporting a couple with Parkinsons and bed-bound. My duties and responsibilities have included administering and managing their medication, preparing home-cooked meals and feeding, assisting with all aspects of personal care, oral care and eye-care. I have been responsible for keeping the house tidy to a high standard, liaising with the family on any requirements and also keeping my care manager updated on any changes in the clients' condition. I worked in a hospital as a clinical support worker on a stroke rehabilitation / recovery ward where I enjoyed a great deal of fulfillment and satisfaction from supporting patients on their recovery journey. I provided support with all aspects of personal care, nutritional and hydration needs, moving and handling as specified and agreed for each individual patient/client. I have a professional work ethic with high standards in record-keeping, respect for privacy, individuality & confidentiality. I have valuable previously transferable skills and experience (including working variable shifts), that make me suitable for the role of live-in carer. I am a self-starter. At the end of the day, it gives me a sense of purpose knowing that I have enabled someone be the best that they can be in their current situation, by being that extra pair of hands or legs to meet their basic needs. I also worked as part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team assisting nurses and doctors in the administration of medicines and other clinical procedures. I have had a 5-day live-in carer training & induction session with Helping Hands. With this background, I am looking for an opportunity where I can continue to exercise my caring nature in a more flexible working environment while supporting people meet their holistic care needs. I believe in empowering people and using a rehabilitative approach as a way of encouraging clients to maintain some self-belief and confidence within themselves. Bed-bound or not, I believe that clients should be encouraged to be involved in their care delivery as much as possible, rather than have everything done for them. As a professional carer, I believe in recognising the limitations in my competencies as a means to ensure safety for both the clients and myself. ...
