I have worked in care work for a total of 5 years. My first job was for South Bucks NHS. I looked after adults with a range of learning and physical disabilities. As a care assistant, my role was to support the clients in their personal care, cooking, shopping, and other day to day needs. I was appointed keyworker to one of the residents. In conjunction with the client's family and the senior staff I helped to develop care plans for them and make and keep appointments. I worked a similar job for the Oxfordshire Social Services and left to work as a care assistant for the Blue Arrow Care agency. I covered mostly staff sickness and general staff shortages in a variety of private and care homes,including children's homes, homes for the elderly, mental hospitals, and the private homes of people with spinal injuries and cerebral palsy. It was with Blue Arrow that I first learned techniques of moving and handling, including the use of a hoist. My final job as a carer was for Home Instead. I provided personal care in the private homes of elderly people. For one job, I had to accompany an elderly businessman to his work place where I stayed on call to take him to the toilet and then finally back home. With Home Instead I completed certificates in first aid and manual handling. In between working in care, I studied BA hons Film and Media at the University of Winchester and an MA in Creative Writing at Open University. Overall, my experience has taught me how to deal with all types of behaviour and mental and physical disabilities.
