Having cared for my elderly mother during the early stages of her vascular dementia diagnosis, I gained an understanding of the needs of a good carer.
I learned the importance of systems, protocols and routines, especially with regard to record keeping generally, and specifically administration of medication, finances, implementation of care plans.
Providing stimulating and appropriate activities, trips, and experiences was a key feature of my care. Providing resources and opportunities for crafting, making and listening to music, storytelling, gentle, regular exercise, and attendance at her local church, worked best for her.
I believe that I would bring a number of qualities to any caring role:
1. Hyper vigilant attention to safety and safeguarding.
2. Endless patience and resilience.
3. Creativity and the ability to really listen to clients' needs, choices, and preferences.
4. Unfailing good humour, and the ability to make the best out of any situation.
