When I wasn't making sure my great-grandmother ate and took her medicine, accompanying her on her walks, lest she forget herself (schizophrenia) or the way back home again (dementia), helping my grandfather--a proud gentleman who suddenly found himself in a situation where he was no longer able to do the things he took for granted for so long--shave and dress, in a manner that didn't diminish his dignity (lung cancer), or dress my grandmother's wounds (stroke), I was volunteering my time and skill as an award-winning stage actor-director and writer performing for ill children in hospitals, in orphanages; and teaching drama to schoolchildren and the youth.
I've always thought being a carer such a noble calling, and now that my personal and professional ambition requires me to relocate to London, I can think of nothing else I'd rather do to keep me grounded, focused, and fulfilled as a person.
