Live-in Support Worker 

Location:
Birmingham, Solihull and surrounding areas, with live-in placements based in service users’ own homes.

Working pattern:
Live-in rotations based on individual care packages. Typical patterns may include one week on / one week off, two weeks on / two weeks off or longer agreed rotations.

Reports to:
Care Coordinator / Registered Nurse / Registered Manager

About the role

Lumen Healthcare is recruiting experienced and compassionate Live-in Support Workers to provide high-quality, person-centred care to adults living in their own homes.

The role involves living in the service user’s home for an agreed period and supporting them with their daily needs while promoting dignity, independence, choice, safety and quality of life.

Service users may include older adults and adults with dementia, learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, neurological conditions and complex healthcare needs.

Depending on the individual care package, the role may also involve supporting people with complex care needs such as tracheostomy care, ventilation, suctioning, oxygen therapy, PEG or NG feeding, epilepsy, catheter care, stoma care and other delegated healthcare interventions.

Staff will only undertake specialist procedures where they have received appropriate training and have been assessed as competent.

Main responsibilities

• Provide person-centred support with personal care, washing, bathing, dressing, continence care, oral care, mobility, repositioning, nutrition, hydration and other activities of daily living.

• Support service users with medication in accordance with care plans, MAR or eMAR records, company procedures and individual competency assessments.

• Provide agreed complex-care interventions where appropriately trained and assessed as competent, including tracheostomy care, suctioning, ventilation support, enteral feeding, epilepsy care, catheter care, stoma care and other delegated healthcare tasks.

• Support service users with everyday living, including meal preparation, shopping, household tasks, appointments, activities, companionship, accessing the community and maintaining social relationships.

• Monitor changes in the service user’s physical, emotional or behavioural wellbeing, recognise deterioration and escalate concerns appropriately to the clinical team, management or emergency services.

• Maintain accurate and timely care records and report incidents, accidents, safeguarding concerns, medication concerns and changes in the service user’s needs.

• Maintain confidentiality, professional boundaries, dignity, respect and safe working practices while living and working within the service user’s home.

Essential person specification

The successful applicant must:

• Care Certificate.

• Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, Health and Social Care or equivalent.

• Have previous experience in health care, social care, domiciliary care, live-in care, complex care or a similar support role.

• Have a good understanding of person-centred care.

• Be able to provide personal care respectfully and maintain service-user dignity.

• Understand safeguarding responsibilities and know how to recognise and report concerns.

• Be able to follow care plans, risk assessments, medication instructions and professional guidance.

• Be able to recognise changes or deterioration in a service user’s condition and escalate concerns appropriately.

• Have good written and verbal communication skills.

• Be able to complete clear, accurate and factual care records.

• Be confident working independently for extended periods.

• Be able to maintain professional boundaries while living in a service user’s home.

• Be reliable, patient, calm and able to respond appropriately in emergencies.

• Be willing to complete mandatory and specialist training.

• Be willing to undertake competency assessments before carrying out complex-care interventions independently.

• Have the legal right to work in the United Kingdom.

• Be willing to undertake an Enhanced DBS check.


Desirable qualifications and experience

• Level 4 or Level 5 Health and Social Care qualification.

• Previous live-in care experience.

• At least two years’ experience supporting people with complex needs.

• Experience supporting older adults.

• Experience supporting people with dementia.

• Experience supporting people with autism or learning disabilities.

• Experience supporting people with physical disabilities or neurological conditions.

• Experience in palliative or end-of-life care.

• Medication Administration training.

• Moving and Handling training.

• Basic Life Support training.

• Safeguarding Adults training.

• Mental Capacity Act training.

• Dementia training.

• Autism and Learning Disability training.

• Full UK driving licence.

• Access to a vehicle where required by the individual placement.


Complex-care experience desirable

Experience in any of the following areas is advantageous:

• Tracheostomy care.

• Tracheal suctioning.

• Invasive or non-invasive ventilation.

• Oxygen therapy.

• Cough assist.

• Nebuliser and inhaler support.

• PEG, gastrostomy or jejunostomy care.

• NG feeding.

• Enteral feeding pumps.

• Medication through enteral feeding tubes.

• Epilepsy management.

• Buccal midazolam or other prescribed rescue medication.

• Catheter care.

• Stoma care.

• Complex bowel care.

• Diabetes care.

• Pressure-area care.

• Acquired brain injury.

• Spinal injury.

 

Applicants do not need experience in every complex-care area. Training and competency assessment will be completed according to the needs of the individual care package.
