Job Description

Experienced Live-in Carer / Personal Assistant

Specialist Spinal Injury Care – Training Provided

Location: Placements mainly in London and the South East
Typical rota: Two weeks on, two weeks off
Pay: £945–£1,106 per seven-day placement, plus a £77 food allowance
Additional benefits: UK travel expenses reimbursed, specialist training, paid DBS and workplace pension

Tetra Live-in Care is looking for experienced live-in carers and personal assistants who would like to provide high-quality, person-centred support to people living with spinal cord injuries.

We are a small, established specialist care provider. This means our carers are known personally, supported by an accessible management team and carefully matched with the people they support.

Most placements follow a two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off rota, although individual placements may range from one to three weeks.

Why join Tetra Live-in Care?

Tetra Live-in Care was founded by a person living with a spinal cord injury who has worked closely with personal assistants for more than 25 years. This lived experience influences how we support our clients and how we treat the carers who work with us.

We understand that successful live-in care depends upon mutual respect, good communication and the right match between the client and their personal assistant. We aim to create stable care teams and positive, lasting working relationships.

As a member of our team, you will benefit from:

  • Competitive placement rates, with enhanced payments for packages involving additional responsibilities or built-in regular night support
  • A typical two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off working pattern
  • Reimbursement of agreed UK travel expenses
  • Specialist spinal injury training and client-specific induction
  • Opportunities to develop advanced care skills
  • A performance review scheme offering opportunities for pay progression
  • Personal support from an experienced and accessible management team
  • An enhanced DBS check paid for by TLC
  • A workplace pension scheme
  • The opportunity to build continuity and a meaningful working relationship with the person you support

About the role

You will live in the client’s home during each placement and provide support tailored to their individual needs, routines, choices and lifestyle.

Depending upon the care package, your responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting personal care, dressing and daily routines
  • Assisting with transfers, repositioning and the use of specialist equipment
  • Supporting bowel and bladder care routines following appropriate training
  • Monitoring skin integrity and supporting pressure-area care
  • Providing medication support in accordance with the client’s care plan
  • Preparing meals and carrying out reasonable household tasks
  • Driving the client’s adapted or other vehicle
  • Supporting appointments, work, social activities and community access
  • Completing accurate daily care records
  • Recognising and responding appropriately to changes in the client’s health
  • Promoting the client’s independence, privacy, dignity and personal choices

The precise responsibilities, working pattern and arrangements for night support vary between clients. These will be explained clearly before you agree to a placement.

Who we are looking for

Previous live-in care experience is strongly preferred. Experience supporting someone with a spinal cord injury or other higher-dependency needs would be advantageous, but it is not essential. Successful applicants will receive specialist training and a client-specific induction.

You should be:

  • Caring, calm and respectful
  • Reliable and able to commit to agreed placements
  • Comfortable supporting someone with higher-dependency needs
  • Confident working independently while remaining part of a wider care team
  • Observant and able to identify and report changes or concerns
  • Committed to promoting independence rather than taking control
  • Willing to learn specialist spinal injury care skills
  • Able to maintain appropriate professional boundaries within a client’s home

Essential requirements

Applicants must:

  • Have previous professional care experience
  • Hold a full driving licence valid for driving in the UK
  • Have the right to work in the UK
  • Have confident spoken and written English
  • Be willing to work live-in placements lasting between one and three weeks
  • Provide satisfactory professional references
  • Complete an enhanced DBS check and TLC’s safer recruitment process
  • Complete all required training and client-specific competency assessments

A driving licence is essential because driving supports our clients’ independence, appointments, work and social activities.

Pay

The standard rate is £960 to £1128 per seven-day placement, including holiday pay, plus a £77 food allowance.

Some care packages attract an additional payment of £11, £13 or £24 per day to reflect regular night support or additional responsibilities. Depending upon the package.

Agreed UK travel expenses to and from placements are reimbursed. We also offer support for international team of personal assistants by way of funding one return flight in the summer and one return flight in the winter.

What our carers say

“Excellent company to work for. I’ve done live-in care for years but never felt so valued and respected.”

“I’m a person who cares, so I want to work for a company that cares for the client. The values are good, and I’m really happy working here.”

Equality and safer recruitment

We welcome suitable applications from men and women.

Some current placements require a female personal assistant because the role includes intimate personal care and the client requires same-sex support. An occupational requirement applies to those specific placements under Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010.

Tetra Care Limited is committed to safeguarding the people we support. All appointments are subject to satisfactory references, an enhanced DBS check, confirmation of the right to work in the UK and completion of our safer recruitment process.
