Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Full-Time Live-In Carer to provide person-centred care for an individual with dementia, a temporary wrist injury, and associated memory challenges. This rewarding role involves supporting the individual in their own home to maintain independence, dignity, and quality of life while managing confusion and ensuring a safe, supportive environment.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Personal Care: Assist with washing due to a wrist cast, encouraging independence where possible. Support with dressing, particularly with buttons and zips, and provide occasional help with toileting (e.g., undoing buttons/zips).
-
Dementia Support: Manage challenges related to dementia, including frequent confusion about who is in the house, which can be distressing for the client and challenging for the carer. Exercise patience, use clear communication, and provide reassurance to reduce anxiety and disorientation.
-
Meal Preparation and Nutrition: Assist with preparing meals and drinks, involving the individual as much as possible. Prompt regular meals and drinks, as memory issues may lead to forgetting to complete tasks like making a drink.
-
Communication Support: Be patient and empathetic, as the individual may experience speech difficulties, especially when stressed, which can cause distress. Allow extra time for communication and provide emotional support.
-
Medication Management: Prompt medication administration using a pre-prepared weekly dosset box, following the provided medication schedule.
-
Household Tasks: Perform regular light housekeeping (e.g., loading/unloading dishwasher, wiping down bathroom surfaces, vacuuming, making the bed) to maintain a tidy home, as the individual values a clean environment but struggles to manage due to dementia.
-
Food Shopping: Arrange food shopping, either through weekly delivery or accompanying the individual on small village trips. Provide guidance to manage confusion and prevent unnecessary purchases, as dementia can lead to disorientation during outings.
-
Pet Care: Care for the individual’s dog.
-
Mobility Support: Assist as needed, noting the individual uses a shower stool but no other mobility aids. Encourage safe movement and independence.
-
Companionship: Foster a warm, trusting relationship to ease confusion and promote emotional well-being, addressing dementia-related distress with empathy.
