Job Description

I have a disabled son aged 55 who suffered a brain injury whilst cycling, 26 years ago. This has left him unable to walk so he is wheelchair dependent, and he has severe speech problems. He needs support in everything that he does, and cannot be left on his own. Due to his brain injury, he has impaired judgement and is vulnerable but also has no inhibition. You will be working mostly on a 1-1 basis.

He lives in the family home in West Sussex and has his own section of the house with his own wet room. I live in an adjoining annexe and we have a care team who rotate shifts to provide 24/7 care. However, we now need another live-in carer to provide stability and consistency.

He loves to go out into the community and is well known locally, as he is quite an extrovert character.  His favourite thing is to go on the bus, so you must be prepared to accompany him. He does have his own car but is unable to drive, therefore you MUST hold a full British Driving Licence and be a confident driver as you will need to drive his car on occasion. He is a football fan and attends football matches when possible, so you will have to accompany him to some matches. He loves to watch matches on TV so ideally, you will like football so you can watch together.

The successful person must be prepared to support him with all of his daily activities, including personal care. Above all, you must have lots of patience, and more importantly have a good sense of humour,  as he does laugh a lot - sometimes inappropriately.  He can also get frustrated with his speech, so you must be a strong person who speaks and understands English confidently, so you can support these moments. You must be physically fit and able to push his wheelchair,  and aid in his transfer from place to place. He does have an electric wheelchair too, but you will need to take control when out and about. We use standing transfers and grab bars in the family home, as he can weight bear,  but is unsteady so close support is needed. Experience in brain injury would be ideal but on job training also given.

Live-in required to provide sleeping night cover, as generally, he sleeps well but needs someone sleeping close by in case he calls or wakes early. You will be required to provide some daytime cover and support with fitness exercises sometimes with other team members. You will get some nights and daytime off, as the 24/7 care cover will be provided between you, the other live-in carer and a daytime carer.

You will have your own bedroom with TV and WIFI access. You will be sharing bathroom facilities & kitchen with other carers.

Does this sound appealing to you? Please get in touch as we are looking for the right person to slot into our team, although mostly you will be working 1-1 with him.
