Job Description

Live-In Carer, Housekeeper & Companion with experience/ knowledge of dementia PART TIME

We are three sisters looking for an experienced, mature and capable person to care for our mother in rural Suffolk. This is job share, we have a one week on, two weeks off cycle.

Our mother is an active 71 year old with a fun personality whom has been diagnosed with Dementia. She enjoys being busy and hence we need someone who likes to fill the day with activities and tasks. She is mobile but struggles with personal care and needs help dressing, washing and need prompting. Whilst she has a fun personality and likes a giggle the dementia affects her moods and she can be challenging and very insistent about certain things, such as leaving the house for appointments, when it is the wrong day. Hence you need to have excellent coping mechanisms under sometimes quite stressful conditions- eg being asked the same questions over and over again.

The accommodation is own bedroom and own bathroom within my mother’s house. The house is a pretty 15th Century thatched cottage overlooking fields in rural Suffolk. We also have a very old but agile black cat. It is a very rural location so you must be happy to live in a small village which is 15 minutes drive from the nearest town.

References and a DBS check will be required.

Duties
• Cleaning and tidying the house and keeping it in excellent condition
• All washing and ironing for my mother
• Food shopping with our mother
• Cooking & preparing 3 meals a day
• All washing up and loading dishwasher
• Feeding and caring for the cat
• Driving my mother to local town for appointments or shopping visits
• Morning activity with my mother- eg swimming, trip to shops, trip to market in Bury St Edmunds or Thetford, out for cup of tea to local café or other similar activity. (This is to alleviate her sense of needing to do something and ensures she a little more relaxed later on in the day)
• Supervising all medication and ensuring that my mother is encouraged to take it at correct times.
• Personal Care, including dressing, washing and changing her.

Hours of work
6 days per week- normally Sunday 3pm to Saturday 3pm, every second or third week (The job is shared with two other carers to allow for time off between weekly shifts). You will be relieved 2 afternoons a week for a break.

Essential Requirements
• Must be able to work from own initiative and have common sense
• Experience of working in an environment where there is someone with Dementia
• Fun out-going personality with good sense of humour
• Must be able to drive and have car
• Must be robust physically and mentally and able to remain calm under pressure
• Must want to live in rural location
• Excellent cook with wide range of recipes

Salary
£95 per 24 hour shift on a 6 day week - all food and accommodation provided. Position available immediately. Please email me your CV, or drop me an email with any questions you have about the role. (07789070505)
