Job Description

Live In Carer for Brain Injured Man

Carer/Companion needed, to support the daily life of a brain-injured 52-year-old man (and his small dog) within the family home. His father lives in an adjoining annexe and his sister is local.

His family are looking for a friendly, confident, experienced carer who is very patient with an outstanding sense of humour. Day to day care is needed during the week on a 1-1 basis. Hours to be discussed, but generally you will be providing 2 days and 2 sleeping nights on, with a day and a night off. Then 2 days and 2 sleeping nights on duty and the weekend off, However you will be expected to provide occasional cover if other team members are off sick or on holiday, as this man cannot be left alone at any time.

He is wheelchair dependent with physical and severe speech disabilities, and relies on his carer for everything, as cannot do much by himself therefore you must be physically fit to push him in a wheelchair, and able to support him when he transfers from his wheelchair around the house, using grab bars. Training will be given on the job.

It is essential that you hold a full British Driving Licence, as he does have his own car which you will be expected to drive him in. He has his own vehicle insurance for this.

Duties will include personal care, daily showering and dressing, vegetarian food preparation, dog walking and feeding, daily outings to the beach, or into the local village or town, to encourage social interaction. In better weather you will be required to take him on bus journeys which he enjoys, or to his beach chalet locally. His brain injury can cause him to act inappropriately at times, and also leaves him vulnerable. Therefore you will need to have good common sense with a diplomatic outlook, that leads you to safeguard him in a non obvious way.

You will be responsible for light housework and laundry, and general day to day running of a home. You must be level headed and calm in stressful situations, as his brain injury can lead to frustration.

Experience of brain injury preferred, but care experience of a younger person and not just elderly care is essential.

He does not have a learning disability and is very quick witted. Personality plays a huge role in this job, as he will keep you on your toes and you need to be open minded with the ability to motivate. English must be your first language, due to his speech issues and his repetitive reference to 80s comedy lines or music lyrics.

He used to be a computer programmer before his accident, and uses social media every day to communicate. Knowledge of social media and technology an advantage. He enjoys watching sports - mainly Darts, Snooker and Football and he holds a BHA season ticket. So a sport-loving carer would be ideal.

If you feel you can make a difference to this mans life, and are full of enthusiasm , energy and fun, then we would love to hear from you!
